Devotion 11
Seek God's Word
Psalm 119: 105
"Your word is a
lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
We are all
inexperienced in too much of life to be without a
guide. God's Word is that guide.
The whole of
Psalm 119 unfolds
manifold features of God's Word, showing how
dynamically it will assist us in life's most
practical circumstances. But no single verse
focuses this more clearly than
verse 105, which
shows how God's Word lights the way, giving
direction for each step,
("to my feet") and giving wisdom for long
range plans (" to my path").
Joshua links
the regular application of God's Word to life as
the most certain way to both success and
prosperity in living.
Joshua 1:8
"This book of
the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you
shall meditate in it day and night, that you may
observe to do according to all that is written in
it. For then you will make your way prosperous,
and then you will have good success."
Psalm 119: 130
"The entrance
of Your words gives light; it gives understanding
to the simple."
The above verse
in Psalm notes the wisdom God's word gives to the
"simple," a truth specifically pointing toward
the avoidance of making decisions based on human
delusion or out right senselessness.
Proverbs 6:23
"For the
commandment is a lamp, and the law a light.
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life."
The scripture
in Proverbs reminds us that the "reproofs" or
corrections the Bible gives are as much a part of
the "light" it provides as any positive or
confirming direction we find therein. Let God's
Word guide, correct, instruct, lead, teach, and
confirm. Do not hasten ahead without it--ever.
By living your
life according to the Scriptures and its
instructions you will grow in godliness. Practice
obedience to God's Word. Understand that it's the
key to further understanding. Order all your life
according to God's Word as the key to purity.
Seek
illumination from God's eternal Word and not from
man's finite wisdom. Regularly meditate on the
Scriptures in order to plumb their depths.
Take your stand
on the rightness of God's Word. Understand that
evil is that which disregards God's instruction.
Seek knowledge but, most of all, gain
understanding. Know that practical understanding
is more important than mere knowledge. Daily ask
God to open your heart and mind through the
ministry of the Holy Spirit to the message of the
Scriptures.
And, mostly
even in your afflictions, recognize that God is
true to His Word. You can depend on Him. For God
is consistent and unchanging. His nature is
reflected in His law.
Remember that
only the life in the light of God's Word is lived
wisely. For this reason, our study of the Bible
must be constantly accompanied with the petition
that God will give us wisdom and understanding
through our study so that we can learn to live in
a way that pleases Him.
