"How Much Do You Love Me?"
Coffee With Pat Written By: Pat Aman copyright 2006 All rights reserved
I remember when our girls were little we would tuck them into bed. We would go
through the routine of saying "How much do you love me?"
Then they would
stretch their arms apart and say this much mommy. Then they would say "mommy
how much do you love me?"
Then I would stretch my arms as far as they would go
and say this much, plus a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck. Then we
would laugh, say our prayers and go to bed.
I think about that and I suddenly wonder if our Heavenly Father longs to hear those words, too. The first thing Jesus did for us is He Stretched His arms out on a cross and said, "I love you this much." "Now Jesus asks, "How much do you love Me? What will your answer be? Pastor Pat Aman Now Jesus had shown himself only two other times since His resurrection. This time was the third, as they were fishing by the Sea of Galilee. Jesus ask Peter by the Sea of Galilee, "Do you love me?" Jesus wanted to know. If you remember Peter had denied Jesus three times. This was the very moment Jesus reinstated Peter. In other words He let Peter know that he forgave him. (John 21: 15-19) Jesus Reinstates Peter 15. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." 16. Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." 17. The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." 18. Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." 19. Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!" Now I seemed to hear that same question echo around me. Do you love me? And those words float up inside me. "Yes, Father, I love You!" And at the very moment my love for Jesus grows more alive, merely by expressing it. Of course, I know that it was not Jesus who needed to hear it as much as I needed to say it. That is why He asked Peter long ago, and why He asks you and me today. "How much do you love me?" (Matthew 22:37) says, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." Father God, I praise you and yes, I love you, Jesus.
