(Matthew 4:1-11) 1.Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2.After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3.The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." 4. Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" 5.Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: " 'He will command his angels concerning you,and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" 7. Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" 8. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." 10. Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'" 11.Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. I have so often pleaded with so many of the people whom read the devotions, how important it is to learned the Word of God. To memorize it. To have it embedded in your heart. (Psalm 119:11) Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against thee." Jesus, himself, used the Word of God to defeat satan in the wilderness. When we have the word of God in our hearts, we also can say, "It is Written," to make satan get out of our lives. As each of you know I give the Kid's Team a Bible Verse to learn every week. This is also refreshing God's Word in my heart. I hope you are learning the Bible Verses also. The scriptures above talk about being tested, and what type of test we may go through. To be tempted, from the divine standpoint, means a positive test; from the devil's standpoint it implies enticement to sin; from Jesus' standpoint it is a challenge from satan to test God's sovereignty and plan. It does not imply doubt, but expression an assumed fact and may be translated "since." Jesus' appeal to Scripture provided the clue for interpreting the Temptation narrative. Using the Word of God, He is victorious over the same temptations to which Israel has succumbed in the wilderness, when they forced a test upon God in time of need.' The temptation solicits a compelling messianic proof. Rather than early power, Jesus affirms exclusive worship of God and His vocation of humble obedience and suffering.
